Experienced Legal Counsel

Sarah MacGillis found her niche in being a trial lawyer. She brings unparalleled enthusiasm, hard work, and tireless creativity to her practice. Sarah has been recognized as a "Super Lawyer" by Minnesota Law & Politics Magazine every single year from 2011-2022, an honor bestowed upon less than 5% of all lawyers within the state of Minnesota.  She has earned that honor by working exceptionally hard on her clients' matters and consistently delivering excellent results in a variety of forums.  Prior to that, she was named a "Rising Star" multiple years by that same publication.

Sarah  has presented CLEs on many substantive areas of criminal law.  She has taught and lectured extensively on written and oral sentencing advocacy in state and federal court.  She is considered an exceptional writer who has earned accolades for her ability to make complex issues understandable and interesting and to tell her client's story in a compelling and personal way.

Sarah has also taught and lectured on professional licensing board representation.  She recently presented a CLE on thoughtful and strategic representation of nurses before the Minnesota Board of Nursing at the Minnesota CLE Center. She frequently teaches professionals about the intersection between administrative and criminal investigations and how to handle both effectively.

Sarah was selected to be a federal defense practitioner mentor in the federal district courts in Minnesota assisting new federal attorneys in all facets of practice.  Previously, she was an adjunct professor at the University of Minnesota Law School and at Mitchell-Hamline  School of Law .

Sarah has been a regular contributing author to the Minnesota Association of Criminal Defense Lawyer’s magazine. She have served on the Board of Directors for the Minnesota Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and for the Innocence Project of Minnesota.

On a Personal Note

Sarah grew up in a small town in southeastern Minnesota where she learned that hard work, steely determination, and pure grit pay big rewards. That lesson, passed on to her by her parents, has made her a dedicated and talented advocate. Her interest in people and the circumstances of their lives make her a compassionate and spirited ally.

Outside of practicing law, Sarah enjoys spending time with her family. She’s a committed long distance runner who has completed many Ragnar relay road races and half marathons in multiple states.  She coaches an early morning running class for "Moms on the Run."  She also coaches boys lacrosse.  She travels when life allows it, still reads a paper version of the daily news, and always enjoys a tough crossword puzzle.
